Planting 5 million oysters to help clean & restore the Baltimore Harbor
Join us in transforming Baltimore Harbor by planting 5 million oysters by 2030! This ambitious initiative aims to revive historic oyster populations and purify our waters for both people and wildlife. Together with our dedicated volunteer oyster gardeners, participating shell recovery restaurants, and partner organizations we can create a cleaner and healthier harbor for everyone to enjoy.
We Need Your Help To Restore Baltimore Harbor!
Become an oyster gardener and enjoy a unique, hands-on, and rewarding volunteer experience that not only helps restore oyster populations in Baltimore Harbor but also connects you with a community of advocates dedicated to fostering a healthier harbor ecosystem.
Your contributions will play a crucial role in cultivating millions of baby oysters to adulthood. Participants will enjoy the rewarding experience of learning to install and maintain public oyster gardens. You'll discover techniques for enhancing oyster growth by removing algae and sediment, and have the chance to monitor oyster spat development in the Inner Harbor from September to June, fostering a meaningful connection to our marine ecosystem.
At the end of the growing season, you have the rewarding opportunity join us aboard a Living Classrooms Foundation boat to transport these mature oysters to a protected sanctuary in the Patapsco River, where they will be seeded and live out the rest of their lives.
The Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, along with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Baltimore businesses and residents like you, have come together to form the Baltimore Oyster Partnership.
